Marevna was the pseudonym of Maria Bronislavovna Vorobieva-Stebelskaia (1892-1984). The daughter of a Russian dancer and a Polish aristocrat, she started her artistic education in Moscow, but soon moved to Paris to became one of the members of the Ecole de Paris. After traveling around Europe and South America she finally settled in England.

During her late creative period, Marevna painted mostly portraits depicting her friends from Montparnasse. She also became acquainted with the young French designer Germinal Rangel. Rangel collaborated closely with film production companies, creating costumes for films such as Agatha Christie's mystery drama Evil Under the Sun.
This portrait of Germinal Rangel was given to the sitter by Marevna, the designer's friend and customer.
