The first tonneau wristwatch was launched by Cartier in 1906, featuring the distinguished, elongated lines which have not changed since. The current tonneau model has been launched in 1999 and is very similar to its predecessor.

The early tonneau wristwatch is illustrated in Le Temps de Cartier by Jader Barracca, Giampiereo Negretti, Franco Nencini, p. 54.
