Lot Essay

The composition is based on Rafael's fresco The Fire in the Borgo in the Vatican.

Other versions of this composition exist, one by Lambert Suavius in the Centraal Museum, Utrecht and another by Ludger Tom Ring in the
Westfälisches Landesmuseum, Münster. This painting is larger than
the Utrecht picture by Suavius and has extensive underdrawing
indicating that it could indeed be the prime version of the composition by Suavius; Nicole Dacos has suggested that there is close relationship between the two works (written communication, 29 November 1999).
