The addition of the words 'War Fund 1900' on the present watercolour reveals that it was painted for the Artists' War Fund Exhibition at the Guildhall Gallery, London, in 1900. All works in the exhibition were later sold at Christie's in order to raise money for those suffering in the Second Boer War (1899-1902): the auction realised a total of £9,120.
The statue of Thomas Carlyle was cast in 1882, the year after his death, and was designed by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, Bt., R.A. (1834-1890). It stands on the Chelsea Embankment, not far from Carlyle's house.
