Lot Essay

John Wilson, who was a pupil of John Norie and Alexander Nasmyth, taught drawing at Montrose where he painted landscapes, later establishing himself in London where he exhibited his work from 1807 until his death and he was one of the founders of the Society of British Artists. This picture makes it clear that he visited Dublin in 1824 but there is no record of the nature of his stay in Ireland.
