Gilpin worked in association with other artists not infrequently. An Equestrian Portrait of a Gentleman by Gilpin, Walton and Barret was sold in the Bute Collection of Sporting Pictures, Christie's, London, 27 May 1999, lot 11, (£64,200).

Richard, second son of Ralph and Mary Bendyshe, married in 1783 Jane, daughter of John Jervis of Darlaston, Staffordshire. He inherited Barrington Hall, near Cambridge, from his uncle, Robert Bendyshe (whose portrait was also painted by Walton), in 1777. This portrait is likely to have been painted shortly after that date. Walton and Gilpin collaborated on another portrait of Richard, full-length with his dog in a landscape, which was sold at Sotheby's on 13 April 1994 (lot 51). Walton also painted a group portrait of Richard's wife and their two children, Richard and Robert.
We are grateful to Evelyn Bell for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
