Lot Essay

This gilt-gesso pier glass is a fine example of Irish gesso-work of the 1730s. The pair of eagles on its cresting, echoed in the tiny profiles on each side, are typical of Irish crafstmanship, as is the flattened shell decoration. It came from Belvedere, Co. Westmeath, the great Palladian house built circa 1740 for Robert Rochfort, 1st Earl of Belvedere (d. 1774) to designs by the celebrated Irish architect, Richard Castle.
