Although born in Co. Tipperary, Latham received his training in Antwerp, becoming master of the Guild of St. Luke between 1724 and 1725. He established himself as the leading portrait painter in Ireland from the late 1720s to the 1740s, where his sitters included the celebrated Charles Tottenham, M.P. (Dublin, National Gallery).
