Lot Essay

This armchair has the 'shepherd's crook' arm often seen on contemporary English armchairs. It also has a tall rectangular back often found on Irish chairs such as those probably supplied to Thomas Kavanagh (d. 1790) of Borris, Co. Carlow soon after inheriting the Borris estates on the death of his father in 1741.
