Each plain circular and on spreading foot, the bases engraved with initials 'B' over 'G A', each marked on base with maker's mark only, stuck twice on one bowl and once on the other

The initials are those of George and Ann Bartram, daughter of John Bartram (1699-1777) of Philadelphia, first American born botanist. (2)

These bowls descended in the family with a punch bowl engraved with the Bartram arms, by Philip Syng of Philedelphia (Christie's New York, 26 January 1995, lot 411). The family probably began using the Bartram arms after a meeting between John and a George Bartam - a Scottish emigré who came to Philadelphia before 1760. George later became John's son-in-law. A letter to a relative in Lanarkshire, dated 1 March 1760, by George reads 'I hope you will excuse the liberty I have taken in desireing the favour of you to inclose me a Draft of your Coat of Arms, which you will please to have done in as Nice a manner as possible on paper, as it is for a Gentleman of this place, a Mr. Bartram & his brother residing at North Carolina who are my particular friends and are very anxious to have their Arms, which is not to be had here.'
