Lot Essay

The bold Roman acanthus carving and scrolled feet on these chairs recall English chair patterns executed by St. Martin's Lane cabinet-makers such as Vile and Cobb, who supplied a suite of similar chairs to Sir George Lyttelton, 5th Bt. (d. 1773) for Hagley Hall, Worcestershire (sold Christie's London, 14 June 2001, lot 51). Interestingly, as The Knight of Glin (bid.) comments, 'the acanthus carving on the knees continues much further down the leg than it would on an English chair of the same date.
