Scallop shells, the badge of Venus who was drawn to dry land in one after her birth at sea, were one of the most popular Irish decorative motifs. They appear on chairs, tables, case furniture and mirrors. This table shows the love Irish designers had for the serpentine 'line of beauty'. Even the scallop shell is serpentined. The apron is carved with trailing ivy, sacred to Apollo. Roman acanthus completely wraps the tops of the legs and the small 'fetlock' just above the foot, again both Irish characteristics.
