Lot Essay

Now home to the distinguished Irish artist Elizabeth Cope, Shankhill Castle began its life as a tower house but was rebuilt in 1708 and set in a formal landscape with an ornamental canal to the rear. In the 19th Century it was enlarged and castellated, and it must have been after these alterations that George Miller, an artist, and James George Robertson, a professional architect, visited the property.
