Lot Essay

The present watercolour shows a shrine in Colombo with a figure in native dress. The city's ancient fortifications can be seen retreating into the horizon and a frieze of convolvulus dominates the foreground. This frieze effect is reminiscent of his Dublin flower paintings of the 1830s.
