A RARE AND UNUSUAL SILVER-MOUNTED JAPANESE IVORY AND GEM-SET OKIMONO VINAIGRETTE-CUM-SEALING WAX HOLDER
UNMARKED, THE MOUNTS PERHAPS FRENCH (BUT NO CONTROL MARKS), CIRCA 1875/85
Modelled as rats or mice emerging from a stack of fruit, with silver foliate mounts above a girdle with raised bead motifs alternating with small engraved fleurs-de-lys, the top fruit pulls off to reveal a cylindrical sealing wax compartment, the one on the side also pulls off to reveal a small oval vinaigrette with diaperwork grille, on silver pedestal foot, the base now fitted with a mirror but probably originally fitted with a seal, in original fitted case.
