Lot Essay

The present lot is after the antique marble of the virgin huntress now housed in the Louvre, Paris. The marble was first recorded in 1586 in Fontainbleau but was later moved under Louis XIV to the Grande Galerie at Versailles and finally to the Louvre in 1789. F. Haskell and N. Penny, Taste and the Antique - The Lure of Classical Sculpture 1500-1900, New Haven and London, 1981, no. 30.
