A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER INCISED AND GILT MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

The cover deeply carved with a continuous landscape of rocky outcrops, reeds and trees, a scholar seated in a boat playing the flute beneath a canopy under a wutong tree, a fisherman sitting behind him listening attentively, the sides of the box and cover crisply carved with keyfret pattern, the interior and base lacquered black, the body core material of metal, with the four-character mark, Xian Zhou Bao He, 'Treasure box of the Immortals' on the inside of the cover, the gilt reign mark incised on the countersunk base

Lot Essay

The present box and cover appears to be from a set of boxes, each with a different scene of immortals in landscapes and an accompanying four-character inscription to the interior of the lid describing the scene on its cover. Two other examples in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, were included in the exhibition Carving the Subtle Radiance of Lacquers, Taipei, 2008, and illustrated in the Catalogue, p. 126, nos. 118 and 119.
