A FINELY CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

The cover skilfully and intricately carved in varying layers of relief through the rich red lacquer, with the Eight Daoist Immortals in a landscape scene amid pine trees and jagged rocky ledges awaiting the arrival of Xi Wangmu descending from above on a phoenix, the underside carved with a similar landscape scene depicting scholars dining at a table, all reserved on three types of diaper-ground defining the ground and sky, the sides carved with lively scenes depicting scholars and their attendants, the interior lacquered black over a lead core body
