The upper surface and sides of the cover deeply carved through alternating layers of black, red and yellow lacquer with three broad ruyi-shaped motifts, the box encircled by a bracket scroll, the countersunk base and interiors covered in black lacquer, the base incised vertically with Zhangcheng Zao mark
