A RARE CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 15TH CENTURY

Of compressed circular form, deeply carved through layers of cinnabar red and black lacquer, the flattened top of the cover with a central camellia blossom surrounded by leaves and buds extending over the gently curved sides, the box with a narrow frieze of further flowers and leaves, the base and the interiors lacquered black, the countersunk base incised vertically Yangmao Zao

The inscription on this box refers to Yang Mao, who is mentioned in the Gegu yao lun as being a pupil of Yang Hui of Xitang at the end of the Yuan dynasty and famous for his carved red lacquer ware, see Sir Percival David, Chinese Connoisseurship, The Ko Ku Yao Lun: The Essential Criteria of Antiquities, London 1971, p. 146.
