AN UNUSUAL 'DREAMSTONE' MARBLE-INSET ZITAN TABLESCREEN
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

The rectangular white marble panel well-figured with grey and green veins depicting a mountain range shrouded in misty clouds, the slab set within a zitan frame, with a stand formed by two thick scrolled feet, from which rise vertical posts flanked on either side with dragon-form openwork spandrels carved with chi dragons above and on the aprons in high relief

Lot Essay

Marble panels of this type, where the natural markings suggest ink landscape paintings, were treasured by scholars and were popular from at least the Ming dynasty onwards. These 'stone paintings', predominantly made of marble quarried from Dali in Yunan province, were prominently displayed in scholars' studios and gardens, as well as imperial pavilions
