This subject-matter is more commonly found on bamboo brushpots of the mid-Qing period, such as the example illustrated by S. Kwan, Ming and Qing Bamboo, 2000, pp-324-5, no. 89. The Chinese cabbage signifies a humble life and was a popular subject among scholars for its simplicity and unassuming form.
