Lot Essay

Initially painting in a style closely related to the landscapes of his fellow townsman Jacob van Ruisdael, the artist shows the influence of Philips Koninck in his later works. The foreground of the present lot still betrays his Haarlem origin, while the atmosheric perspective of the extensive river valley view recalls the work of the Amsterdam painter.
