The sitter was councillor at the Court of Justice of Utrecht. He was the son of Sebastiaen de Wijs (1535-1608) and Aeltje Dircks van Santen (+1618) (see De Nederlandsche Leeuw, LXXXVII (1970) pp.172-173).
