Lot Essay
The present lot has been examined with infrared photography by Hélène Verougstraete-Marq of the University of Louvain-la-Neuve, in June 1983. She concluded that the picture is signed and dated 1607 on the throne of Christ on the left, a spot which was later covered with overpaint. As such the picture is the only known independent oil painting by the artist, who is further known through his signed fresco's in the chapel of the castle at Ancy-le-Franc, Burgundy (L. Réau, La Bourgogne, la Peinture et les Tapisseries, 1929, p.14, plate 14). His style is reminiscent of that of the School of Fontainebleau, with which he might have been acquainted through his study at Ancy-le-Franc, where the series of frescoes in the gallery of the Pharsale is generally believed to be by Nicolo dell'Abate.
