Lot Essay

The oeuvre of Pennincks, so far only small, consists of Italianate landscapes with shepherds or mythological figures, for instance the landscape, signed J.PEN, offered in these rooms, 11 November 1996, lot 121, with ill. and the landscape signed F.Pennito, offered at Christie's London, 19 March 1982 (see Rotterdamse Meesters uit de Gouden Eeuw, exhibition catalogue, Rotterdam, Historisch Museum, 1994/1995, p.103, fig.10). On the basis of the signature Pennito, I. de Jager, op.cit., p.103 suggests that the artist worked in Rome.
