Lot Essay

Professor Jaap Bolten has, on the basis of a photograph, confirmed the attribution. He states that it is the only known drawing of a theme that Bloemaert painted early in his career, but does not resemble the painted versions: these show Judith on the steps of Holofernes' house with his head, while the drawing illustrates the actual execution.
