1990 EITELSBACHER KARTHAUSERHOFBERG
Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Auslese 23--Vintage 1990
Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Estate-bottled: Tyrell
In original six-bottle cartons. Purchased directly from the estate Vintage note: The third good vintage in a row, but totally different to 1989 in several respects. First of all a much smaller crop, below the 10-year average, but firmer, many of the major estates having the highest sugar/acid levels but little botrytis.
Another mild winter and early growth. Well-nigh perfect spring. Flowering early in the Mosel, followed by a hot dry summer, later in Rheinhessen, and some heavy rain. Rather like 1976 in England, the hot summer abruptly ended with serious rain in August, followed by a cool wet September, and rot. The surviving crop benefited from sun and warmth in late September and October. Another classic Riesling vintage, at best finest wines since 1971. *****. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
