This is a preliminary study for Jordaens' picture of circa 1660 (fig. 1) of the same subject (d'Hulst, op. cit, pl. VII), formerly in the collection of Baron van Zuylen, and now at Brussels, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts. In this picture there are, in addition to the torchholders, two more onlookers at the left, the Dove has been added above the Virgin's head, while the capitals and dome are richly ornamented. The arched top of the drawing may be explained by the arch in the picture.
In his publication of 1956 (op. cit., p. 298, fig. 196), d'Hulst compares this to the drawing of Christ among the Doctors in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. In his publication of 1974 (op.cit., no. A362, fig. 380) d'Hulst also compares this to Jordaens' larger drawing of the same subject in the Biblioteca Reale, Palazzo Reale, Turin, which he dates to the same period.
