1999 CORTON-CHARLEMAGNE FROM COCHE-DURY

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru--Vintage 1999
Domaine-bottled: Coche-Dury
Vintage note: Not another good vintage? Burgundy has had a remarkable run of good vintages recently though the whites are perhaps not as remarkable as the reds. Thanks to sunny conditions in the late summer and early autumn, there were record levels for Chardonnay, averaging 180 g/l, and substantial tartaric acidity at 7.5 g/l, both the highest at the start of a harvest for ten years which resulted in wines with substantial alcohol, extract and balancing acidity. These are wonderful wines, the lesser ones for drinking soon while young and fresh and the classics destined for good, even long term, drinking. **** Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine

Tasting note: As Jean-Francois Coche served his 1999 Corton Charlemagne, he said, "This wine will go far, as it is very, very young." It reveals ripe white fruits and a powerful spice component in its aromatics. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine is fresh, super-ripe, and expansive. Sweet apples, pears, and a myriad of spices coat the taster's palate and take it hostage for about a minute after it has been spit out. It is an extraordinarily long-finishing wine that is a tribute to Coche's talents, skills, and hard work. Projected maturity: now-2012. (92-93 points).
