Lot Essay

William W. Robinson, who supports a tentative attribution to Van de Velde, compares this to a signed landscape drawing dated 1660, which according to Gernsheim (no. 44 207) is at Christ Church, Oxford, though this does not seem to be otherwise recorded. Other landscape drawings by Van de Velde are in Amsterdams Historisch Museum, B. Broos, M. Schapelhouman, Nederlandse tekenaars geboren tussen 1600 en 1660, Amsterdam/Zwolle, 1993, nos. 134-7 and 139-41.
