Lot Essay

This may be compared to a drawing of similar subject, technique, format and signature in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, E. Bock and J. Rosenberg, Die Niederländischen Meister, Berlin, 1930, I, p. 74, II, pl. 61. A smaller drawing of similar subject is in the Historisch Museum, Amsterdam (B. Broos and M. Schapelhouman, Nederlandse Tekenaars geboren tussen 1600 en 1660, Amsterdam/Zwolle, 1993, no. 6). All the drawings may be dated to the same period as that in the British Museum, London (B. Broos, R. Vorstman and W. L. van de Watering, Ludolf Bakhuizen 1631-1708, exhib. cat., Amsterdam/Emden, 1985, no. T9, illustrated), dated 1679. The latter composition was also painted by Backhuysen, and identified as off the Plymouth coast. The present hitherto unknown drawing may well show the same coast seen from the opposite side.
Details regarding the provenance were kindly supplied by Dr. H.-U. Beck.
