Lot Essay

Professor Sumowski and Professor Christian and Dr. Astrid Tümpel have kindly confirmed the attribution. The facial types and technique are typical of the artist. Only one picture of this subject by Moeyaert seems to be known, A. Tümpel, Claes Cornelisz. Moeyaert, Oud Holland, 88, 1974, nos. 1-2, fig. 10, cat. no. 138, which is dated to circa 1632. The composition may be compared to that of Rembrandt's etchings of the same subject (B., Holl. 81-2) dated 1633 and 1642 respectively.
