...Even for the short time he was in Chicago (1954) Matta got a drawing board, and when not dealing with students or socializing or touring the city, he found time to make drawings. What is most difficult to convey about Matta is the energy he put into everything he did, the excitement he brought to every conversation, the quickness of his mind, his infectious laugh (and he laughed often), and the genuine charm of the man. In retrospect, the brief Chicago visit more or less sealed the Matta/Chicago relationship...and the result was that by the end of the decade Chicago probably had more Matta paintings in important collections than did any other city in the world...
