The general cargo steamer Irish Elm was built for Irish Shipping Ltd. by W. Gray & Co. at West Hartlepool in 1953. Registered at 5,828 tons gross (3,209 net), she measured 419 feet in length with a 58 foot beam and was engined by her builders.
