Lot Essay

The three-masted full-rigged merchantman Aphrogencia was built in Sunderland in 1855 for James Lesslie of North Shields. Registered at 561 tons, her trading routes are unknown but this portrait was almost certainly commissioned to mark her maiden voyage.
