Lot Essay

A number of attributions have been suggested, including Jacob Ochtervelt, Adriaen van der Werff and Pieter van Slingeland. The latter's double portrait of Jan Musschenbroeck van Leyden and his wife, dated 1688 (sold at Sotheby's, London, 25 November 1975, lot 31, illustrated) shows a woman holding a dog on her lap in the same pose as the present drawing. In this drawing the pose could also be of a girl sewing.
