Lot Essay

Stolker was born in Amsterdam where he worked as a portrait painter until 1757. In that year he moved to Rotterdam, where he painted many wall decorations. He is also known for his copies after 17th Century artists, such as the present lot, which is based on Nicolaas Verkolje's picture now in the Menil Foundation Collection, Houston, inv. no. 67-30, which was engraved in reverse by J.B. Michel, C. Wansink, Een teruggevonden schilderij van Nicolaas Verkolje (1673-1746), Oud Holland, 101, 1987, pp. 86-8, illustrated.
