Lot Essay

The inscription verso, that would seem to be contemporary, identifies the sitter as 'M.C. Visscher...'. Meester [Master] Carel Wouter Visscher (1734-1802) was born in Utrecht and became a lawyer in Amsterdam. He married Anna Anthonia van Muyden (1733-1769) in 1759, and was appointed an Amsterdam Pensionary in 1769, which he remained until 1787. The inscription attributing the present lot to Troost was probably added in the 19th Century.
