A SOAPSTONE CARVING OF A MONK, INCISED YU XUAN MARK, 17TH/18TH CENTURY
seated cross-legged, with a bare forehead and long pendulous ear-lobes, his voluminous robes covering his hands which are held together before him, the hems with incised floral decoration and inset semi-precious stones, the stone of a creamy green tone, incised Yu Xuan signature to the reverse -- 2¾in. (7cm.) high.

Lot Essay

The two-character name, Yu Xuan, is generally attributed to the famous Fujian soapstone carver Yang Ji who was believed to the active during the early Kangxi period.
Another soapstone figure of a seated luohan, inscibed Yu Xuan, is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, Arts from the Scholars Studio, Oriental Ceramic Society, Hong Kong, 1986, pp. 86-87, no. 45, where the authors provide a full discussion of Yu Xuan.
