The Entrance of the (Wijde) Kapelsteeg with the Nieuwezijds Kapel, Amsterdam, the Burgerweeshuis beyond

Another version, dated 1781, is in the Atlas Splitgerber, Municipal Archives, Amsterdam, and a version dated 1818, finished and also signed by Gerrit Lamberts, is in the collection of the Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap, Amsterdam. Probably part of a series of watercolours of comparable format by Schouten of similar scenes in Amsterdam; a comparable unsigned watercolour of an alleyway at the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam, was sold in these Rooms, 25 November 1991, lot 202A (as Paulus van Liender). Three other views are in the Municipal Archives, Amsterdam, B. Bakker, E. Fleurbaay, W.A. Gerlagh, De verzameling van Eeghen, Amsterdamse Tekeningen 1600-1950, Zwolle, 1988, pp. 290 and 293, nos. 288 and 291, illustrated pp. 8 and 261, and B. Bakker, Amsterdam getekend, The Hague, 1978, p. 15, illustrated. Jacob Cats' very similar view was sold, F. Muller, Amsterdam, 10 December 1906, lot 60.
The Nieuwezijdskapel, also called Heilige Stede, was probably consecrated in 1347. After a fire in 1452 the church was rebuilt. Because of dilapidation it was closed in 1890 and demolished in 1908. Only a column on the Rokin, constructed of remains of the church survives reminds one of the building. Jan de Beyer's view of the Rokin with the church was sold in these Rooms, 20 November 1989, lot 176.
