Lot Essay

There are several variants of design of birds among rocks or trees on this form of vase. For another variation see, Oriental Ceramic Society, Porcelain for Palaces: The Fashion for Japan in Europe, 1650-1750 (London, 1990), no.144, p.166. In his footnote Dr Oliver Impey refers to these vases as being of Kakiemon type.
