UNSIGNED, ATTRIBUTED TO MASAO, EDO PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)
A broad shallow-curved katana with o-kissaki, the omote of kata-kiriha zukuri, the ura shinogi-zukuri, fine itame hada with jinie and chikei, gunome-ba hamon of nie with many variations, the tang with a kiritsuke-mei 'Kyomu-Maru' [Mist Pincher], in its fine red-lacquered scabbard with long iron kojiri with gold inlaid leafy vine, matching fuchi-kashira, the menuki of gilt circular Buddhist emblems, silver habaki engraved with with characters for 'hasamu-kyo' and 'kiri-mu'

Lot Essay

Accompanied by a certificate of registration as a Hozon Token [sword worthy of preservation] no. 370983 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword] issued on 20th June 2005.
The smith Suzuki Jiro Minamoto Masao was the leading pupil of Minamoto Kiyomaru.
