This would seem to be the preliminary study for the painting of the same subject with several differences attributed to Hendrick van Balen (1575-1632) in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, J. Lauts, Katalog Alte Meister, Karlsruhe, 1966, no. 809, illustrated. Other versions of this are in the Gräflich Schönborn'sche Sammlung, Pommersfelden, and sold, Schiller sale, Vienna, 10 May 1932, lot 439. Lauts judged the Pommersfelden version to be the best.
The Karlsruhe painting was first recorded in an inventory of 1691 as Rottenhammer.

It has also been suggested that this could be by a 17th Century Flemish hand.
