Lot Essay

Schwanthaler was born and died in Munich, where he was court sculptor to Ludwig I of Bavaria. He came from a family of sculptors extending in an unbroken line of 21 sculptors over seven generations, and was trained by his father, Franz Jacob Schwanthaler (1760-1820). It would appear that the album could have been assembled from several other albums, and also includes some drawings by other hands.
