THE CUPS LONDON, 1675, MAKER'S MARK WG WITH CRESCENT BENEATH, ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM GRANT, THE COVERS WITH MARK OF JOHN GAMON ONLY STRUCK FOUR TIMES, CIRCA 1730
The cups with knopped stem, the covers domed and with baluster finial, engraved under the foot and on the cover with an inscription, marked near rim, under foot and inside cover

The inscription under the foot reads 'St. Mary Newington 1675.'

The inscription on the cover reads 'Ex Dono Eliz Yallop to St Mary Newington Butts.' (2)

Lot Essay

Elizabeth Yallop (d.1748), widow of Thomas Yallop (d.1713), fishmonger, left a legacy of £5 'to the Treasurers of the Charity School of St. Mary Newington Butts in the said county of Surrey £5 for the use of the poor children there' in her will proved on 8 March 1748 (PRO Mss PROB 11/761).

The attribution of this maker's mark is based on an ongoing research project at Goldsmith's Hall.
