He was educated at the Malvern School and then University College Oxford, matriculating in 1943 with a degree in Medicine and Surgery. In addition to his work for the City of Birmingham Health Department, Dr Gordon served an electoral session as a conservative councillor. He was an avid traveller, theatre enthusiast, and antiquarian bibliophile. He was a member of the National Trust, the Royal Horticultural Society, English Heritage and the R.A.C. club in London. His interest in British History, particularly that of the 17th Century, led him to regularly visit historic estates and castles as well as the auction rooms in London. Dr Gordon's portrait miniature collection was acquired mainly in the 1970s and 1980s and is significant both in its emphasis on the Stuart Monarchy and in its attention to predominantly British miniaturists of the 18th and early 19th Centuries.
