PROPERTY FROM THE LATE DR WILLIAM LINDSAY GORDON COLLECTION Dr William Lindsay Gordon was the son of Dr William and Elsie Gordon of Sparkhill Birmingham. He was educated at the Malvern School and then University College Oxford, matriculating in 1943 with a degree in Medicine and Surgery. In addition to his work for the City of Birmingham Health Department, Dr Gordon served an electoral session as a conservative councillor. He was an avid traveller, theatre enthusiast, and antiquarian bibliophile. He was a member of the National Trust, the Royal Horticultural Society, English Heritage and the R.A.C. club in London. His interest in British History, particularly that of the 17th Century, led him to regularly visit historic estates and castles as well as the auction rooms in London. Dr Gordon's portrait miniature collection was acquired mainly in the 1970s and 1980s and is significant both in its emphasis on the Stuart Monarchy and in its attention to predominantly British miniaturists of the 18th and early 19th Centuries.

Oblong silver-mounted shagreen case bearing an applied silver plaque engraved with the arms of the Barber Surgeons' Company flanked by the initials 'S' and 'B', containing a 17th Century pearl-set silver, gold and enamelled pendant mounted with an enamel portrait miniature of King Charles I (1600-1649), in black doublet, wearing the blue moiré sash of the Order of the Garter, chased gold bezel within silver-mounted pearl surround, the reverse enamelled with rose and black festoons on white ground; together with another 17th Century gold and enamel pendant mounted with an enamel portrait miniature of King Charles I, in black doublet, wearing the blue moiré sash of the Order of the Garter, pierced and enamelled gold pendant, the reverse enamelled with rose and black festooned leaves and chased with foliate scrolls; together with an early 18th Century gilt-metal and rock crystal pendant set with a portrait miniature on vellum of King Charles I, in plate armour, wearing the blue moiré sash of the Order of the Garter, skull and red curtain inscribed on left 'ob 30 jan 48', filigree surround, chased gilt-metal bezel
