signed with monogram 'BL' (lower right)
on ivory
oval, 3 in. (76 mm.) high, in turned ivory frame stained to resemble ebonised wood, the reverse with backing paper inscribed 'Thomas._ nat. 1711. afterwards Sir Thomas K.B. married Anna dr of Sir Jn. Cope ob. 1773.'

Lot Essay

The sale of Lady Whitmore's miniatures at Christie's, London, 1971, included portraits by Lens of other members of the Whitmore family including the present sitter's siblings and parents, William and Elizabeth Whitmore of Apley Estate, Shropshire and Lower Slaughter, Gloucestershire. The portrait of Thomas's sister, lot 129 of the 1971 Christie's sale, is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. no. P.14-1971).
