Bothwell castle was built during the 13th century by Walter de Moravia and played a crucial role in the wars of Scottish Independence, being one of the first sites seized by King Edward I.
'New' Bothwell Castle was built in the late 17th century close to the ancient Douglas fortress, but was demolished in 1926 after mining subsidence. The present urn stands were not included in Christie's sales of the contents that took place in the June of 1919.
