AN EGYPTIAN GILT AND PAINTED CARTONNAGE ENSEMBLE
ROMAN PERIOD, CIRCA 1ST CENTURY A.D.
Consisting of two brightly painted elements, a mask and a foot covering, the mask with a gilt face, the eye outlines, brows, and beard blue, with red at the corners of the eyes, the tripartite wig surrounded by a fillet, a winged scarab over the crown of the head in raised relief pushing a solar disk, with Osiris depicted on the back panel, a broad collar between the lappets; the foot covering representing sandaled feet in raised relief, figures of Anubis above, figural panels on the sides, one side with a kneeling figure before a ram-headed sphinx, the deceased lying in state above, the other side with a kneeling figure before a two-headed sphinx, the deceased above, conquered enemies in raised relief on the soles; together with a pectoral with falcon-headed terminals, centered by two kneeling figures, surrounded by rows of decorative elements, including large band of lilies towards the edge
